SOURCE OF WEALTH: Ellis Lake Capital

FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Causes, Education

OVERVIEW: Gabriel and Beth Nechamkin conduct their philanthropy through the Simbat Foundation, which prioritizes Jewish organizations. According to available tax filings, Simbat awarded $747,000 in grants in 2017. Gabriel also supports his alma mater, University of Rochester.

BACKGROUND: Gabriel S. Nechamkin has a bachelor’s in economics from University of Rochester. He was a managing director and head of trading for the arbitrage, high yield, and distressed securities department at Soros Fund Management and was a co-founder at Satellite Asset Management. He is a co-founder of Ellis Lake Capital.

ISSUES:

JEWISH CAUSES: The Nechamkins support the local Jewish community, particularly in the Greater New York City area. Grantees include Camp Ramah National Commission, Solomon Schechter School of Westchester, UJA Federation, Jewish Theological Seminary, and Jewish Community Center.

EDUCATION: Nechamkin supports his alma mater, University of Rochester and has been involved with Hillel at the school.

OTHER: The family has directed money to Community Funds, Inc., the nonprofit corporate affiliate of The New York Community Trust.

LOOKING FORWARD: Nechamkin is still very much engaged in business, but perhaps the family’s philanthropy will deepen down the line. Beth has a background in psychology and law and currently works in college planning, so K-12 education may emerge as another giving interest.
