Fordney Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Fordney Foundation supports children and young adults who wish to dance competitively. The foundation also awards grants to nonprofits that discover and train dancers.

IP TAKE: Fordney does not award a large number of grants each year. Grant seekers should be aware that this funder supports the same groups each year, making it more difficult for newcomers to break in here. 

PROFILE: Established in 2002, the Fordney Foundation was created by Marilyn Takahasi Fordney to provide children and young adults with dance sport grants. It seeks to “help children and young adults realize their dreams of artistically expressing themselves through ballroom dancing.”

The foundation awards grants to nonprofits that discover and train dancers for careers in dance. Grants are also awarded to groups that build an increased community awareness of dance sport. Fordney also awards grants to amateur dancers under 25 who wish to dance competitively.

According to Fordney’s latest tax filings, grant amounts can range from just a few hundred dollars up to $25,000. Most awards, however, range from $2,000 to $5,000. The foundation accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry. The submission deadline for LOIs is April 1.
