OVERVIEW: The Philadelphia Health Partnership, formerly known as the First Hospital Foundation, supports access to health care and health equity in the Philadelphia region.

IP TAKE: This funder has undergone a name change and taken on a new strategy that involves a greater equity approach and desire for cross-sector collaborations.

PROFILE: Established in 1997, the Philadelphia Health Partnership (PHP) was originally named the First Hospital Foundation. Pennsylvania Hospital merged with the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 and established the fund to improve the well-being of the most vulnerable populations in the five-county metropolitan area. Today, PHP seeks “to improve the health and well-being of underserved Philadelphians by supporting access to quality care and services.” Major grantmaking areas of interest are health equity, access to health care, and vulnerable populations.

The funder focuses its grants on programs that advance equity and that address the social determinants of health on the local level. The foundation is specifically targeting very young children under the age of five and their families, as well as immigrants and refugees with its grantmaking. The funder looks to partner with other funders and also other sectors to influence policy and systems change. It is increasingly interested in supporting nonprofit capacity-building efforts as well.

Past grants have often ranged from $20,000 to $30,000. It typically awards 20 to 30 grants per year. View a list of past grants by year on the funder’s website. Grantmaking is focused on the city and county of Philadelphia.

In the past, this funder has accepted unsolicited grant proposals from nonprofits. However, it is not clear whether it will continue accepting unsolicited requests or primarily support pre-selected groups in the initial stages of its new giving strategy. Grant seekers should direct general questions to the staff at 215-546-4290 or info@philadelphiahealthpartnership.org.
