SOURCE OF WEALTH: Eton Park Capital Management, Goldman Sachs

FUNDING AREAS: Health, Education & Youth, Arts & Culture, Jewish Causes

OVERVIEW:  Eric and Stacey Mindich conduct their philanthropy through the Mindich Family Foundation. Available tax filings indicate that the foundation awarded just under $1.6 million in grants in 2018. The couple has also made several big individual donations.

BACKGROUND:  Eric Mindich graduated from Harvard with a bachelor’s in economics. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1988 in the equities arbitrage department. At 27, he became the youngest partner in the history of the firm. Mindich went on to found Eton Park Capital Management, which shut down in 2017.

ISSUES:

HEALTH: Mindich joined the board of trustees of Mount Sinai Hospital in 1998. The couple’s three sons were born at the hospital. The couple provided a leadership gift to support “translational research that will advance groundbreaking science and medicine for infants, children, and adolescents.” The family has given at least $15 million to Mount Sinai through the years.

Mindich Family Foundation grantees have included American Cancer Society, Whitehead Mindfulness Initiative, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Mindich has supported his alma mater Harvard, including a $15 million gift he gave with Stacey to support the school’s Mindich Program in Engaged Scholarship and Mindich Service Fellows Program. The couple has also supported Stacey’s alma mater Syracuse, as well as St. James School, Harlem RBI, and Harlem Village Academies.

ARTS & CULTURE: Stacey Mindich is a Tony Award-winning theater producer and co-chair of the board of New York City Center. Eric chairs the board of Lincoln Center Theater. Grantees have included Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology in suburban Los Angeles.

JEWISH CAUSES: Grantees have included American Friends of Magen David Adom and American Jewish Committee.

LOOKING FORWARD: Mindich is still very much engaged in business,  but perhaps will direct greater giving through his foundation down the line.
