OVERVIEW: The Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust supports the needs of children with mental health disabilities in Pennsylvania.

FUNDING AREAS: Children and youth, mental disabilities, mental health

IP TAKE: This foundation takes a very personal approach to giving based upon what was most important to the founders.

PROFILE: Established around 1976, the Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust is a private foundation based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Edith Trees and her husband, Joseph, owned property north of Pittsburgh that was an apple and peach orchard. Joseph Trees earned a fortune in the oil drilling industry, and the couple’s son had a mental disability and autism. Edith Tree’s wish was that this trust use all available funds to care for people with mental disabilities. Specifically, it funds local efforts for the health and welfare of children with mental health challenges.

The Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust does not have a website to guide grantseekers. However, past tax records indicate that this is a single-issue funder that only has one main interest area. The foundation directs all of its giving towards children, teens and young adults who have mental challenges. In the past, these grants have gone towards educational programs and opportunities in the arts.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $50,000. The foundation has given over $13 million in grants in recent years. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on Western Pennsylvania and especially the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Past local grantees include the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

This foundation typically accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The foundation requires grant application materials to be submitting through a PNC Charitable Trusts cyber grants portal. The submission deadlines are May 1 and October 1. Direct general questions to the staff at 412-768-5892 or project manager Amanda L. Creps at Amanda.creps@pnc.com.
