OVERVIEW: Eddie and Sylvia Brown established the Eddie C. and C Sylvia Brown Family Foundation at the Baltimore Community Foundation in 1994, which addresses needs in the areas of health, the arts, and K-12 education. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded over $1.5 million in grants in 2017. The family’s philanthropy is laser-focused on Maryland and accepts proposals via the Baltimore Community Foundation.
BACKGROUND: Eddie C. Brown was born in Florida and attended Howard University, receiving a B.S. in electrical engineering, as well as degrees from New York University and Indiana University’s business school. Brown worked at T. Rowe Price Associates before founding Brown Capital Management in 1983.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION: Brown and Sylvia created the Turning the Corner Achievement Program (T-CAP), an education initiative that targets at-risk middle school students in Baltimore. Last decade, the family also gave a multi-million gift to help establish the Brown Center at Maryland Institute College of Art. The couple have also supported outfits like Morgan State University Foundation, Living Classrooms Foundation, The Seed School of Maryland, Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship-Baltimore, and The Baltimore School for the Arts Foundation. University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is also home to the Brown Capital Management Faculty Institute of Entrepreneurship.
ARTS: The couple have supported outfits like Baltimore Museum of Art, The Everyman Theatre, and Maryland African American Museum Corporation. Much of this work has been focused on bolstering the visibility of black Americans in the arts. Other important outfits include Walters Art Museum, and Enoch Pratt Free Library.
HEALTH: The Browns prioritize the impact of HIV/AIDS in the black community, as well as the prevention and treatment of cancer. The Browns have been steady supporters of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where Sylvia sits on the advisory board. Sylvia also holds a master’s in health education and once chaired the Greater Baltimore Medical Center/Maryland Public Television Women’s Healthcare Conference.
