OVERVIEW: The East Bay Community Foundation combines the assets of multiple smaller foundations in Alameda and Contra Costa that support civic and neighborhood projects. It funds Arts and Culture, Capacity Building, Community Development, and Economic Opportunity.

IP TAKE: This community funder is all about equity and advancing partnerships and policies to create a more just East Bay. This funder accepts applications during its open submission window.

PROFILE: Established in 1928, the East Bay Community Foundation is a community foundation based in Oakland, California. It seeks to ensure “that all members of [the] community are treated fairly, with equitable opportunity and outcomes” and works to partner “partners with donors, social movements, and the community to eliminate structural barriers, advance racial equity, and transform political, social, and economic outcomes for all who call the East Bay home.” The foundation has given approximately $50 million to $65 million to organizations that benefit the residents of the East Bay in recent years. Its areas of interest and program strategies include Arts and Culture, Capacity Building, Community Development, and Economic Opportunity.

Grants for Community Development, Racial Justice and Indigenous Rights, Arts and Culture, and Work and Economic Opportunity

The East Bay Community Foundation has four broad program strategies that encompass all of the foundation’s giving programs and initiatives. Its Arts and Culture focus area prioritizes social and racial justice. Its Capacity Building programs operate through a racial equity lens. The Community Development area supports community organizing, power building, and movement building. Economic Opportunity fosters inclusive economic models.

The foundation stewards several hundred charitable funds and endowments for general community benefit or designated purposes. Its funds encompass donor advised funds, affiliate funds, and supporting foundations.

While it does not provide a complete list of grantees, it does highlight many of its Core Grantees, groups that the foundation considers to be leaders in their respective program strategy area.
