SOURCE OF WEALTH: DCF Capital

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Health & Human Services, Religious

OVERVIEW: Douglas and Olivia “Livvy” Floren, and family made a $10 million gift to Dartmouth College. The family also gives through the Henry Gustav Floren Family Foundation, which modestly supports educational, health, and other causes. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $260,000 in grants from 2017 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Douglas C. Floren graduated from Dartmouth in 1965. He went on to found hedge fund DCF Capital in Greenwich, Connecticut.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Last decade, Douglas and Olivia Floren and family gave a $10 million gift to Dartmouth College toward construction of Floren Varsity House. Outside of Dartmouth, the family has supported Greenwich Country Day School, where Livvy was once board president, as well as Park City Day School, Vassar College, Whitby School, and Princeton University, where their daughter graduated.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: The Florens have an interest in medical research, and direct steady funds to Stanford University, including research that helped Stanford scientists discover a biomarker for flu susceptibility. Other grantees include Bethesda Hospital Foundation, Boston Children’s Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Greenwich United Way.

OTHER: The Florens have supported Round Hill Community Church.

LOOKING FORWARD: Livvy is a State Representative in the 149th District in Connecticut, which may influence the family’s future giving. Perhaps the family’s foundation will direct funds to local and regional policy outfits. Away from the Northeast, the Florens also have ties to Florida.
