Diogenes Charitable Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Diogenes Charitable Foundation’s visual arts grants typically go to support larger, well-known museums.

IP TAKE: This funder does not award a large number of grants each year or maintain a public presence.

PROFILE: Established in New Jersey in 1997, the now New York-based Diogenes Charitable foundation is a low profile funder that does not operate a website or employ a formal paid staff. According to its tax filings, the foundation appears to have a diverse set of funding interests, which include visual arts, higher education, and environmental conservation.

Foundation-wide, grants can range from $500 to nearly $200,000; however, the majority of grants range from $2,000 to $35,000. Past visual arts grantees include the New Museum of Contemporary Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Diogenes’s grant awards typically go to support larger museums in major metropolitan areas rather than smaller local or community-based museums. Although the foundation does not impose geographic restrictions on its grantmaking, it appears that the majority of its visual arts grants are awarded to organizations located in or around New York City.

The Diogenes Charitable Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications or requests for funding.
