PROFILE: Four large banks created the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta in 1951, which were Citizens & Southern National, First National, Fulton National, and Trust Company of Georgia. In its first year, the foundation awarded $450,000 to Atlanta area nonprofits, and its annual grantmaking amount has since grown to $112 million in 2018. The foundation’s assets reached $1.1 billion. The foundation seeks to “help the Atlanta region prosper” by “connecting the passions of donors with the purposes of nonprofits.”
CFGA supports 23 counties in the Atlanta metro area and is one of the nation’s top 25 community foundations by asset size. These counties are as follows: Barrow, Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Morgan, Newton, Paulding, Pickens, Rockdale, Spalding, and Walton.
The foundation has five funding areas: arts, community development, education, health and human services, and nonprofit effectiveness. Education grants encompass early learning, post-secondary education, and workforce preparation. Health grants encompass needs like access to care and nutritious food. Grant programs offered include General Operating Support (includes Common Good Fund, Atlanta AIDS Fund, Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund), Extra Wish, Grants to Green, Nonprofit Toolbox, and the Neighborhood Fund. The foundation has many different deadlines to keep up with for its various funds. At any given time, there can be a dozen funds with upcoming competitive grant deadlines throughout the year. The foundation also supports community initiatives, including past ones related to public schools, arts, AIDS issues, eco-friendly workplaces, and veterans’ needs.
To apply for a grant, grant seekers will need to complete an organizational profile and common grant application on the foundation’s online application portal. In general, most grants are between $10,000 and $75,000, last for a 12-month period, and are very competitive.
