OVERVIEW: Cody Smith moves his philanthropy through the Summit Foundation. Smith steadily supports his schools. Other interests include arts and culture and the environment. Available tax filings reveal that Summit awarded $463,000 in grants in 2018.

BACKGROUND: Raised in Colorado, Cody J. Smith studied engineering at Claremont McKenna College and Stanford University. He also earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. He joined Goldman Sachs in the 1980s and eventually became a partner.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Cody Smith has steadily supported his alma maters, Claremont McKenna College, Stanford, and Harvard. Other past grantees in education include Chess in the Schools, where Smith serves as on the board of directors, and New York City’s Student Sponsor Partners, an organization that supports underprivileged students with financial support, guidance and mentoring.

ENVIRONMENT: Smith’s philanthropy in this area has prioritized his home state of Colorado and his own special interest in mountain climbing. Past grantees include the American Alpine Club, the American Mountaineering Center, Colorado Open Lands and the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative. Smith also helped to fund a National Park Foundation study that provided a comprehensive economic valuation of U.S. national parks and the programming provided by the National Park Service.

ARTS AND CULTURE: Smith has supported museums in New York City and Colorado. Past grantees include the Whitney Museum of Art, the National Museum of Mathematics, the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.

LOOKING FORWARD: Cody Smith will likely continue to support organizations working in his areas of special interest, as well as organizations serving New York City and Colorado.
