OVERVIEW: The Christel DeHaan Family Foundation supports arts and culture and at-risk youth in Indiana.

IP TAKE: Christel DeHaan died in 2020, and the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation ceased operations in 2023 after distributing $55 million.

PROFILE: Established in 1993, the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation is a private family foundation based in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was originally called the RCI Foundation until it was reorganized in 1997. Christel DeHaan was a German-born businesswoman and philanthropist who once owned Resort Condominiums International as a timeshare pioneer and founded Christel House International. The foundation sought to “make [its] community a richer and more vibrant place.” It funded local efforts for arts and culture.

Grants for Arts and Culture and Community Development

The Christel DeHaan Family Foundation awarded grants for the arts, education, child welfare and human needs organizations over the years. However, it refined its giving strategy to focus almost exclusively on arts and cultural organizations now. The funder did not support private foundations, individuals, political causes, or Type III 509(a)(3) supporting organizations. It funded some efforts for high-quality arts education to at-risk youth in Marion County, Indiana. The foundation also awarded board discretionary grants and special project grants on a case-by-case basis.

Past local grantees include the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Timmy Global Health.

Important Grant Details

Grants range between about $10,000 and $100,000. The foundation board approves around $2 million in grants per year. Grantmaking focuses on Central Indiana and especially the Indianapolis region.
