SOURCE OF WEALTH: Goldman Sachs

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Health, Wyoming Community

OVERVIEW: Chansoo Joung and Elisabeth Bittner Joung conduct their philanthropy through the Chansoo & Elisabeth Bittner Joung Foundation. Recent annual grantmaking has been modest. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded around $10,000 in grants in 2018. The couple support their schools and other educational organizations. They spend some of the year in Wyoming, another site of giving.

BACKGROUND: Chansoo Joung graduated with an AB in physics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1987 and made partner, culminating his 17-year career as head of the Americas Natural Resources Group in the investment banking division. Joung was also partner and Senior Advisor in the energy group of Warburg Pincus. He is currently the managing partner of TPH Energy Co-Investment Fund Management.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The couple has supported their mutual school, Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, as well as Elisabeth’s school, Yale University. Other grantees include Elon University, St. Luke’s School, and Sankaty Head Foundation, whose mission is to “promote, stimulate, and encourage the education, physical fitness, and general welfare of young men of high school or college age” through a summer caddie camp at Sankaty Head Golf Club.

HEALTH: Cancer research appears to be their main interest. Grantees include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

WYOMING COMMUNITY: The Joungs have a home in Jackson, Wyoming, where they have supported local organizations like Grand Teton National Park Foundation, Center for the Arts, Teton County Library Foundation, and Slow Food in the Tetons.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple to maintain these funding interests. Perhaps more money will move through the foundation in the coming years.
