Catalyst Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Catalyst Foundation focuses its science research grants on scientific and engineering research.

IP TAKE: This foundation emphasizes doctoral student support in its science research funding. These grants are only for Ph.D candidates seeking doctoral funding for science or engineering research around the world. This is an accessible funder for those seeking funding in its supported spaces – provided you have the appropriate resume. Proposals that corroborate partnerships between universities have an edge here. This foundation also likes to take risking in what it chooses to fund and offers support beyond grants.

PROFILE: Founded in 1992, the Catalyst Foundation was established by Dr. Kunio Suyama, co-founder of the OYO Corporation. Based in Valhalla, New York, (not to be confused with the Catalyst Foundation based in Portland, Oregon) the foundation seeks to “foster cross-disciplinary doctoral level university research in the scientific and engineering fields,” and supports “research projects in which at least one discipline is related to analog or mixed analog/digital integrated circuit design and analysis.” Catalyst awards research project grants to help defray the costs of student support—including the costs of salary, tuition and travel conferences—equipment and miscellaneous expenses, and research supervisor conference travel attendance.

Grants for Science Research and STEM Education

Catalyst provides funding for “university cross-disciplinary research projects in which at least one discipline is related to analog or mixed analog-digital integrated circuit design and analysis.” It gives preference to projects that help diffuse such work geographically.

The foundation limits its equipment and miscellaneous expenses grants to $20,000 or less and its travel and conference attendance grants to $2,500 per year for students and $3,000 per year for research supervisors. The duration of each is up to four years. Grantees may request additional funding after the initial grant period ends; however, Catalyst warns that such grants are “[c]onsidered only in exceptional circumstances.”

Important Grant Details:

The Catalyst Foundation announces a call for proposals once per year, generally around the second quarter. Applicants invited to apply for a grant must submit their proposals by mid-December. It encourages collaborations by multiple universities.

Submitted proposals must be prepared by university professors and must be submitted by the grant office of the corresponding university that leads the project. The foundation supports researchers and investigators based in the United States and around the world.
