OVERVIEW: Carlos Cordeiro conducts his philanthropy through the Cordeiro Family Foundation, which available tax filings indicate, gave around $1.5 million from 2017 to 2018. Cordeiro has supported organizations in education and healthcare, with a focus on Idaho.
BACKGROUND: Born to a Colombian mother and a Portuguese father in 1956, Carlos A. Cordeiro immigrated to the United States from India. He moved to Miami as a teenager and graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Business School. He joined Goldman Sachs and made partner in the early 1990s, and was later appointed Vice Chairman-Asia. From 2005 to 2015, he was an independent director of BHP Billiton, the world’s largest natural resources company. He is currently the president of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

EDUCATION: Cordeiro and family have donated to Harvard University and the UNLV Rebel Athletic Fund, as well as nonprofits like Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence and Strive.
HEALTHCARE & HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees include Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer, The Hunger Coalition, Bald Mountain Rescue Fund, and St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, which is committed to “achieving excellence in health care for the community of the greater Wood River region.”
GLOBAL: Given Cordeiro’s global background, it is no surprise that his philanthropy involves global issues. Grantees include Oxfam, Cuba Emprende Foundation, and the Language Project, which creates and supports libraries in underdeveloped areas.

SPORTS: Not only is Cordeiro is a lifelong soccer fan who has been involved in U.S. Soccer since leaving Goldman, he also rowed at Harvard. A component of his philanthropy supports National Rowing Foundation, Australia Rowing, and Friends of Harvard Golf.
LOOKING FORWARD: With Cordeiro now assuming the role of president of the United States Soccer Federation, perhaps greater sums will go to sports causes in the coming years.
