Careth Foundation

OVERVIEW: The CarEth Foundation broadly supports grassroots community organizing, civic and human rights, democratic institutions, rule of law, and social justice in the United States and around the world.

IP TAKE: This is a modest, private funder that like’s to build long-term, established partnerships with its grantees, which means its funding space is crowded. New grantees rarely get noticed given the foundation’s dedication to supporting its previous grantees for multiple cycles. The foundation also does not accept requests for funding given it’s all volunteer board. It’s grants, however, come with no stipulations, which help organizations in a variety of ways. To get on their radar, reach out and briefly introduce your foundation’s work, but keep in mind that it will be hard to get through since the organization is run by volunteers, mostly family members. Another approach here is to network with the foundation’s previous grantees to see if you can get an introduction that way.

PROFILE: The CarEth Foundation was established in 1967 as the Grumman Peace Foundation in order to apply “Judeo-Christian ethics to current U. S. foreign policy.” In 1972, George Grumman changed the name of his foundation to CarEth, in honor of his mother Carol and aunt Ethel. In the twenty-first century, the foundation’s work expanded to encompass “global economic justice, cooperative governance and citizenship, global human rights and multilateral systems that support human rights standards.” Its grantmaking addresses human rights, women’s rights, peace, and democratic government. The foundation is also proud to have signed the Divest Pledge.

Grants for Democracy and Civic Engagement
The CarEth Foundation’s goals related to democracy and civic engagement broadly work to promote “a global community of shared values” through inclusion and peaceful “conflict resolution and the elimination of the root causes of conflict.” Past grantees include Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti, and International Civil Society Action Network.

Grants for Security and Human Rights
The CarEth Foundation makes “connections between peace, justice and human rights.” In addition to the United States, CarEth also supports human rights advocacy in Haiti, Tibet, Pakistan and Central America. Past human rights grantees include U.S. Human Rights Network, Other Worlds, Machik, and Potters for Peace.

Grants for Women and Girls
While the CarEth Foundation does not have a dedicated program for women and girls, it does invest in “movement building, networking and resource sharing within the US to foster human rights as well as women’s human rights internationally.” Past grantees for women and girls include Women’s Regional Network, Developments in Literacy, Educating Every Child, and Global Grassroots.

Important Grant Details:
The CarEth Foundation’s grants generally range from $10,000 to $20,000. The CarEth Foundation has an all-volunteer board. As a a result, it cannot accept unsolicited requests for funding.
