OVERVIEW: The Capstone Legacy Foundation supports Christianity, religion, human services and education in Pennsylvania and beyond.

FUNDING AREAS: Christianity, religion, human services, education

IP TAKE: This Philadelphia-area foundation is not particularly accessible to new grantees, but is still a good organization to know due to its connection to various local, individual donors. If your projects don’t consider Jesus Christ in its giving, this is not the appropriate funder for your work. This is not the most transparent funder given it’s tendency to bury funding sources.

PROFILE: Established in 2005, the Capstone Legacy Foundation (CLF) is a Christian community foundation based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. The financial and spiritual legacy of this foundation is tied to the Lukens Steel Company, which was founded in 1810 and is one of the oldest industrial firms in America. CLF is a direct result of a steel-making fortune and the family of Charles Lukens Huston Jr. and Ruth Huston. The foundation aims to “provide donors with tax-efficient structures and financial tools to provide funding and advocacy for ministries, charitable organizations and other nonprofits in the Greater Philadelphia region and beyond to facilitate the donor’s intent, and whose objectives affirmatively advance the gospel of Jesus Christ.” It funds local efforts for Christianity, religion, human services and education.

The Capstone Legacy Foundation allocates grants that are recommended by individual givers. CLF does not share detailed information about its grantmaking priorities or guidelines. However, CLF’s giving is deeply rooted in the Christian faith and is a prominent funder of religious-based organizations in the area. But beyond just grantmaking, CLF works to help donors with their own planned giving efforts by donating non-liquid assets.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $100,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking largely focuses on the Greater Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. However, some grants go to groups in other states and to national organizations too through donor-advised funds. Since most grants come from individual donors, CLF does not share information about past grantees include in its 990 tax forms.

This foundation does not typically accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. Direct general questions to the staff at info@capstonelegacy.org or 610-688-8890.
