Capezio Foundation

OVERVIEW: Capezio supports organizations that increase appreciation and awareness of dance and encourage new and emerging talents. It also offers a prestigious Dance Award

IP TAKE: This is a formerly accessible funder that has become relatively opaque as of late. Grantseekers can see where the money goes, but often not how it gets there. The foundation does not appear to accept unsolicited applications or requests for funding and even its Dance Award has a secretive selection process.

PROFILE: The Capezio Foundation seeks to create “greater awareness and appreciation of dance as an art form,” and to “recognize the accomplishments of the present and encourage new or emerging talents, trends and practices.” Originally funded by Capezio Inc., the foundation is now supported by Ballet Makers Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of Capezio brand products.

Grants for Dance

While Capezio has a history of supporting nonprofit organizations that have a significant impact on dance, including ballet, modern, jazz, and tap, among others, its focus over the past few years has been its Capezio Dance Award. The award celebrates an individual or dance organization that has made a significant contribution to the arts, contributed to and helped raise public awareness of the arts, and/or made a significant achievement in the arts. Awardees are chosen by Capezio Foundation trustees.

The foundation’s general dance grantmaking does not award grants to individual dance companies, individual dancers, choreographers, dance schools, or dance teachers. Additionally, it does not accept applications for support or unsolicited proposals.

Important Grant Details

The Capezio Foundation is a small organization. The majority of dance grants are relatively modest, ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Capezio does not accept unsolicited grant applications for either its dance grantmaking or its Capezio Dance Award.
