OVERVIEW: The Callaway Foundation supports religion, charity, education and community development in LaGrange and Troup County, Georgia.

IP TAKE: Callaway funds broadly in terms of issues and narrowly in terms of geography. Pitch a community revitalization effort for a struggling part of Troup County.

PROFILE: Established in 1943, the Callaway Foundation supports the philanthropy of Fuller E. Callaway, Jr. Based in LaGrange, Georgia, the foundation’s history dates back to the early 20th century and the founder’s father, who contributed to local schools, clinics, churches, and other charitable needs in the local community. The foundation assumed its current name in 1962, and is one of the largest private funders in the Southeast. Grantmaking areas of interest are broad and encompass religion, charity and education.

Over the years, the foundation has awarded the most grants for educational purposes, followed by other types of charitable causes, and then religion. Community development is an important cause for this funder, which has awarded million-dollar grants to support local efforts. It has supported LaGrange College, for example, to fund its future growth strategy for both the college and the city. It has also supported affordable and sustainable housing efforts, such as DASH for LaGrange. Additionally, the funder has supported downtown revitalization efforts and renovation projects in strategic parts of its service area.

Foundation grants range in size from $25 to $10 million. Annual grantmaking is typically between $7 million and $15 million. Learn more about the funder’s giving over the years in its published annual reports. Foundation grantmaking is focused on LaGrange and Troup County, Georgia. This funder prefers to support construction projects and capital equipment in these areas.

Callaway accepts unsolicited grant applications from local nonprofits and churches. The board meets four times each year in January, April, July and October.
