Brookdale Foundation Group

OVERVIEW: The Brookdale Foundation Group provides significant funding in New Jersey, New York, and Florida in the fields of memory loss programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease, services for family caregivers, and emerging leaders in the field of aging.

IP TAKE: This funder funds very specific aspects of elderly funding, but grantseekers reach out to the staff directly to introduce your program and see what opportunities may be available. Brookdale primarily funds in the tri-state area; however, Florida is also an important site of support. It also makes the occasional grant throughout the U.S., and it has supported groups in Washington D.C. and New Mexico. While this funder does not accept unsolicited applications, it welcomes contact at the information provided below.

PROFILE: Established in 1950, the Brookdale Foundation Group consists of the Brookdale Foundation, the Glendale Foundation, and the Ramapo Trust. These foundations were all endowed by the Schwartz family and have the same purpose. A group of brothers (Henry, Irving, Robert, Benjamin, and Arnold Schwartz) initially established the foundation to support medicine and higher education. However, in 1984 the foundation shifted focus to issues of aging. The funder aims to “enhance the quality of life of America’s elderly.” Grantmaking supports memory loss programs for people with Alzheimer’s disease, services for family caregivers, and emerging leaders in the field of aging.

Grants for Diseases, Community Development

This funder has three major initiatives that it awards grants through, which largely invest in aging and families.

  • It has a National Group Respite Program to support Alzheimer’s patients and their families.

  • It also funds a Relatives as Parents Program to create and expand services for individuals who have taken on the responsibility of surrogate parenting.

  • Lastly, Brookdale has a Leadership in Aging Fellowship Program to support emerging leaders who work with elder issues.

Past support in the Tri-State Area has served the Food Bank for New York City and Geriatric Services, Inc. in Teaneck, New Jersey. A significant amount of the funder’s giving stays in New Jersey and New York. However, this funder also supports national and international programs related to seniors and aging.

Important Grant Details:

Foundation grants tend to be between $5,000 and $50,000; however, other recent grants have been $500,000 and even $10 million.

  • The Brookdale Foundation Group does not appear to accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits, and it does not provide application forms online for grantseekers.
