Bright Horizon Foundation

OVERVIEW: Bright Horizon supports global security causes, as well as organizations that work in conservation, global health, and strengthen democracy across the United States and sometimes internationally.

IP TAKE: This funder does not award many grants each year and tends to support the same organizations year after year. Unfortunately, it lacks transparency and a website, limiting information about its grantmaking strategies and application process. This is not the most accessible foundation and it’s unclear how closely it likes to work with its grantees since it lacks a public profile.

PROFILE: The Bright Horizon Foundation—not to be confused with the Bright Horizons Foundation or the Brighter Horizon Foundation—was established in New York and Delaware in 2000. Its president, Lou Salkind, is the former managing director of multinational investment firm D.E. Shaw and Co., and currently on the board of the Union of Concerned Scientists. The foundation maintains a low public profile, does not operate a website and does not employ a formal staff; however, its latest tax filings indicate an interest in environmental conservation causes and nonprofit organizations seeking to strengthen global securing and resolve deadly conflicts.

While the Bright Horizon Foundation has no website, its tax filings suggest that it supports a number of major domestic and international conservation organizations, such as the Conservation Fund, Trust for Public Land, and Natural Resources Defense Council.

Grants for Public Health and Global Health

Tax filings suggest that it supports a number of major domestic and international health organizations, such as Partners in Health and Doctors Without Borders.
