BACKGROUND:  Arthur J. Stainman graduated with a B.A. from Rider University and attended New York University’s Graduate School of Business. He joined First Manhattan in 1979 and is a portfolio manager with over 40 years of investment research and investment management experience.

ISSUES:

HUMAN SERVICES: The Stainmans have been involved with the New York City Food Bank for more than two decades—Stainman serves as treasurer on the board. The family has supported Citymeals on Wheels, Coalition for the Homeless, Committee on Temporary Shelter, Vermont Food Bank, and Bed Stuy Campaign Against Hunger.

HUMANITARIAN & HUMAN RIGHTS: Grantees include Doctors Without Borders, Greenpeace, International Rescue Committee, NARAL, People for the American Way, and Planned Parenthood.

ARTS & CULTURE: The Stainmans have supported Abingdon Theatre Company, American Friends Musée d’Orsay, The Met, Lincoln Center Theater, Bronx Children’s Museum, and Shelburne Museum in Vermont.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Stainman’s support of alma mater Rider University includes a $2.5 million gift to fund scholarships. The couple’s son, Evan, also attended the school. Other grantees include Hunter College Foundation and Boys and Girls Clubs of Burlington.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Stainman family’s steady giving to continue. Evan is based in Vermont, which may emerge as a region of greater giving.
