SOURCE OF WEALTH: Andell Inc.

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Policy, Jewish causes, Health, LA community, Chicago community

OVERVIEW: Andrew Hauptman and Ellen Bronfman Hauptman conduct their philanthropy through the Bronfman Hauptman Foundation. They co-founded City Year Los Angeles, as well as the Charles Bronfman Prize. The Hauptmans strongly support their alma mater Yale. Other interests include policy and Jewish causes. According to available tax filings, the Bronfman Hauptman Foundation awarded $1.9 million in grants in 2018.

BACKGROUND: Raised in New York, Andrew Hauptman graduated with a B.A. from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard University. He worked as an executive with Universal Studios in London, and in restructuring and mergers and acquisitions with Alex. Brown & Sons in New York. Hauptman co-chairs Andell Inc., a private investment firm and family office with investments primarily in entertainment, sports, and consumer products. He is owner and chairman of Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire.

The daughter of Seagrams beverage company billionaire Charles Bronfman, Ellen Bronfman Hauptman graduated from Yale University. She worked in documentary and feature films as a producer and film buyer for Cineplex Odeon and cofounded Andell Inc. with her husband.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Hauptmans cofounded City Year Los Angeles, an “education-focused nonprofit that engages young people from diverse backgrounds for a year of full-time community service in our nation’s most challenged schools.” Hauptman serves on the national board and is a chair emeritus of City Year LA. They support their mutual alma mater, Yale, and Andrew’s school Harvard. Other grantees include Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, Baby2Baby, The Willows Community School, Crossroads School, and Los Angeles Fund for Public Education, where Hauptman sits on the board.

POLICY: The active Democratic donors have given at least $1 million to the Barack Obama Foundation. Other giving focuses on Los Angeles outfits, including Institute for Nonviolence in Los Angeles, LAANE, Equality California Institute, and the Aspen Institute.

JEWISH CAUSES: The Hauptmans create and endow the Charles Bronfman Prize, which “celebrates the vision and endeavor of an individual or team under the age of fifty whose humanitarian work, combined with their Jewish values, has significantly improved the world.” They have supported American Friends of The Israel Museum, American Jewish World Service, and Sinai Temple.

HEALTH: Grantees include AltaMed Health Services Corporation, Alzheimer’s Association, Global Health Corps, International Medical Corps (where Hauptman is on the leadership council), and Cedars Sinai.

OTHER: The Hauptmans have ties to both Chicago and Los Angeles. Hauptman is president of Chicago Fire Foundation and they have supported World Business Chicago and Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles. In the arts, Ellen helped spearhead Andell Family Sundays, an initiative to engage low-income families and children in the arts at LACMA. They have also supported environmental causes, and Ellen is a member of the Natural Resources Defense Council‘s Los Angeles leadership council.

LOOKING FORWARD: The couple is still very much engaged in business, but expect their steady giving to continue as well. Andrew is interested in sports, which may eventually influence the couple’s giving more robustly.
