OVERVIEW: The Alter Family Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to education, the arts, and Jewish causes. It also earmarks funds for other causes, including health.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: Established in 1998, the Alter Family Foundation was established by businessman Dennis J. Alter and his ex-wife Gisela. Dennis, who steered credit card issuer Advanta, continues to steer the foundation. The foundation does not maintain a website, which restricts further information regarding its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. According to tax filings, the Alter Family Foundation primarily funds grantmaking related to education, the arts, and Jewish causes. It also earmarks funds for other causes, including health.

The foundation often provides general support to local causes in its region of focus. Its education giving prioritizes higher education institutions with which the family has a personal connection, particularly Dennis’s alma mater Temple University, where he was on the board of trustees. The separate Alter Foundation supports the Jewish Federation of Philadelphia and its activities, and indicates the family’s strong interest in Jewish causes, as well.

Grants range from $1,000 to $50,000. In a recent year, the foundation gave away $94,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on the Philadelphia area. Past local grantees include Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia Museum of Art (Alter is on the board), and Tiferet Beth Israel.

The foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept unsolicited proposals.
