OVERVIEW: The Allegheny Foundation supports historic preservation, civic development and education in southwestern Pennsylvania.

FUNDING AREAS: Historic preservation, civic development, education

IP TAKE: Not only is this foundation affiliated with the powerful Scaife name in Pittsburgh, but it is also an accessible foundation that accepts new grant requests at any time.

PROFILE: Established in 1953, the Allegheny Foundation is a family foundation based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is one of multiple Scaife Foundations, along with the Carthage Foundation and Sarah Scaife Foundation. The late Richard M. Scaife, who was heir to the Mellon fortune and publisher/owner of the Tribune-Review Publishing Company, created the Allegheny Foundation. It funds local efforts for historic preservation, civic development and education.

The Allegheny Foundation maintains a website that provides basic information about grantmaking guidelines. It commonly provides program, project, capital and general operating support to local nonprofits. Food banks, housing organizations, community service groups and educational institutions receive Allegheny Foundation grants. However, it does not typically make grants to individuals, organizations that are dependent on government subsidies, event sponsorships, endowments or government agencies.

Grants range between about $10,000 and $1 million. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on southwestern Pennsylvania. Past local grantees include the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy, Angels’ lace and the Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. Grantseekers must send their inquiries in letter form to the attention of Chairman Matthew A. Groll. The foundation considers new grants each quarter of the year. However, nonprofits can submit requests at any time of the year with no deadlines.
