SOURCE OF WEALTH: Senator Investment Group

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Health & Human Services, Jewish Causes

OVERVIEW: Alexander and Kristen Klabin conduct their philanthropy through The Senator Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away $420,000 in grants in 2018. Their main giving interests include education and public health.

BACKGROUND: Alexander Klabin graduated with a B.A. from Princeton University and began his career as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs. Klabin worked as a distressed debt research analyst at Monarch Alternative Capital and a private equity professional at Quadrangle Group before joining York Capital Management. He went on to cofound Senator Investment Group in 2008.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Klabin supports his alma mater Princeton University, including Keller Center’s eLab Summer Accelerator Program. The couple have also been strong supporters of Year Up. Other grantees include Future Leaders Institute Charter School, Girls Preparatory School of the Bronx, University of Iowa Foundation, Invest for Kids, and Northside Center for Child Development.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES:  Grantees include Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, Malaria No More, and Jericho Project, which deals with homelessness.

JEWISH CAUSES: The Klabins earmark funds for Jewish organizations including UJA Federation of New York and United Hatzalah of Israel.

LOOKING FORWARD: The Klabins have zeroed in on a handful of organizations via their Senator Foundation. Still, Klabin is still very much engaged in business, so perhaps this couple’s foundation giving will expand in years to come.
