OVERVIEW: The Albert and Trudy Kallis Foundation aims to foster, develop and create original documentary programming that educates and informs audiences in unique and entertaining ways. The foundation also supports educational and community service organizations by crafting special interest programs, making direct contributions, and endowing scholarships.

IP TAKE: While the foundation does not give grantseekers a clear way to apply for funding, its website does provide a contact form for general questions and inquiries. Grantmaking has been rather modest of late, with a handful of small grants going out annually. This funder’s specialty is support for documentary film productions; projects that deviate too far from this are unlikely to receive support.

PROFILE: The Albert and Trudy Kallis Foundation was established by California couple Albert and Trudy Kallis. They were early investors in IHOP and Albert was also a professional illustrator and art director specializing in motion picture advertising. The foundation produces award-winning film and television programming on a broad range of documentary subjects. It also supports educational and community service organizations by crafting special interest programs, making direct contributions, and endowing scholarships.

Grants for Film and Arts Education

The foundation has produced documentaries like “Most Valuable Players,” which follows high school theater troupes on their journey to the Freddy Awards ceremony – the Tony Awards for high school musicals. The aims is to “foster, develop and create original documentary programming that educates and informs audiences in unique and entertaining ways.” The Kallis Foundation is also a backer of the Young Musicians Foundation (YMF), which promotes the classical music tradition by nurturing the personal, academic, and artistic development of youth

Past grantees include Geffen Playhouse, Skirball Cultural Center, and Santa Monica Philharmonic.

Important Grant Details

Grants range from $100 to $5,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation made grants totaling around $12,000. The foundation does not provide an application form, and indicates no deadlines or restrictions on awards.
