OVERVIEW: Alan Schwartz and Nancy Seaman conduct their philanthropy through the Schwartz Family Foundation, which available tax filings show, gave away around $1.2 million in 2017. Schwartz supports his alma mater, Duke University, as well as other education, youth, and health organizations. New York is an important region of giving.

BACKGROUND: Alan D. Schwartz graduated from Duke University. He was president and CEO of Bear Stearns and later became executive chairman of Guggenheim Partners, an investment banking firm based in Chicago and New York.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Schwartz supports his alma mater Duke University. He has been heavily involved with St. Vincent’s Home Services and the National Mentoring Partnership. Other grantees have included Champions for Quality Education, Harlem Children’s Zone, Harlem Village Academies, Nantucket Children’s Charity, Harlem RBI, The Fund for Public Schools, and Saint Anthony High School.

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Schwartz is on the board of amfAR, which he and his family steadily support. He is also on the board of Robin Hood Foundation, another important grantee. Other grantees have included Bridgeport Rescue Mission, Memorial Sloan Kettering, Connecticut Food Bank, Food Allergy Research & Education, and International Justice Mission.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family’s steady giving to continue in their established interest areas. The family has given donations to assorted Jewish outfits, as well as cultural organizations including New York Philharmonic.
